Food and Drink Gems in Bangkok & Chiang Mai
Bangkok and Chiang Mai are cities that constantly evolve. Rather than giving an extensive overview - which you'll find on countless websites and social media - I've curated a selection of food and drink spots that particularly stood out.
Good cocktails in Bangkok
Bangkok boasts an endless selection of places to grab a drink, from bustling street bars to chic rooftop terraces. For a more serene experience with an incredible view, head to the rooftop of the Dusit Thani. This upscale 5-star hotel may initially come across as a bit formal, but you'll quickly realize that the staff is warm and welcoming, even if you're not staying there. Take the elevator up to the 39th floor and discover the Spire rooftop bar. With panoramic views of the city, a carefully crafted cocktail menu, and a range of light bites, it's the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks or simply unwinding while soaking in the stunning scenery. Cocktails are priced in the European range, between €10 and €15.

For a more adventurous experience, check out a hidden gem called Philtration. Located down a dimly lit street, you might feel like you've wandered off track, but don’t worry—you're almost there. The bar is tucked away inside what looks like a regular house. Once you step inside, you’ll find yourself in a mysterious, old-fashioned library, and to your surprise, one of the bookcases actually leads you into the bar. With its 1920s-inspired atmosphere, Philtration strikes the perfect balance between stylish and laid-back. The menu is quite inventive, with each cocktail creatively illustrated in pencil sketches. The drinks are exceptional, and the service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Cocktails here are around €12 each.

Some food highlights in Bangkok and ChiangMai
When it comes to food, Bangkok is overflowing with options. One standout is Tang Yuu — a lively semi-outdoor BBQ spot where each table gets its own grill. You choose from a selection of high-quality meats and vegetables, and cook everything to your liking. It may sound like your festive family dinner, but this is far from traditional: the vibe is energetic, the service fun and friendly, and the food simply outstanding.
Up north to Chiang Mai
Next stop: Chiang Mai — Thailand’s second-largest city. The most fun (and surprisingly comfortable) way to get there from Bangkok is by night train. Book your tickets via 12Go app for an affordable journey north.

Like Bangkok, Chiang Mai is full of great food spots. Don’t miss Lookbua — a humble street-side restaurant serving bold, flavorful Thai dishes with warm, smiling service.

On Sunday evening, head to the bustling night market. It’s crowded, yes, but worth it for the incredible variety of freshly prepared, colorful street food.
Coffee lovers - take note
TJ Coffee Roaster – a tiny café in a quiet residential area, run by two friendly guys (presumably Mr. T and Mr. J). From strong espressos to refreshing iced lattes, everything is spot-on.

Chic Ruedo – great coffee, tasty bites, and a peaceful outdoor space perfect for lingering.

Sleeping in nature but still close to town
If you’re looking for a place to stay outside of ChiangMai’s city center, try Lanna Ricebarn. With its jungly feeling and quite large wooden house around a great pool, it is a great place to wake up in the morning listening to the sounds of nature and a place to come back to after a strenuous day in the jungle or in town
