Eindhoven - design hotspot
Known as the birthplace of Philips, Eindhoven is quickly shedding its once dull image. Welcome to the Brainport of the Netherlands.
It may not be your first pick for a city trip, but don’t write it off too soon. As the high-tech capital of the Netherlands and home to one of Europe’s leading design academies, Eindhoven is buzzing with innovation and creativity. The growing international community brings fresh energy and plenty of exciting new spots. And it is only a 1,5 hour trainride away from Amsterdam.
Here’s my shortlist of places to check out.
Strijp S
Modern design meets industrial heritage at Strijp S
Once the beating heart of Philips’ industrial empire, Strijp-S has transformed into one of Eindhoven’s most vibrant and creative neighbourhoods. Many of the original factory buildings remain — now repurposed into hip bars, restaurants, cozy coffee spots, and inspiring design shops. These historic structures are seamlessly blended with striking new apartment blocks and cutting-edge architecture.
Delicious pastries at Ted’s
Start your day (not too early though – there won’t be a single soul outide yet) at Ted’s, a warm and relaxed café perfect for coffee and pastries.
Stroll through the old industrial halls to discover the Urban Shopping Center, a curated collection of boutiques housed on the ground floor of a former factory. From fashion and home décor to quirky accessories, there’s something for every taste.
A short walk away is Kookpunt Eindhoven, a haven for cooking enthusiasts, stocked with everything from knives to kitchen gadgets.
Everything for kitchen enthusiasts
Kookpunt Eindhoven
Art, design, food, and architecture — at Strijp-S, it all comes together.
From Strijp-S to the City Center
From Strijp-S, it’s an easy walk to Eindhoven’s original city center—about 20 minutes on foot, passing the iconic PSV stadium, home to the many-time Dutch football champions. Prefer the train? Strijp-S has its own station, and it’s just one quick stop to the heart of the city.
The center is lively, especially on a summer Saturday. With a big student population and a diverse expat community, it feels young, energetic, and international.
Berlage for lunch-garden at the back
For the best shops, bars, and restaurants, head to the “Berg” streets—Kleine Berg and Grote Berg.
Lunch options are plentiful. Try Berlage for its spacious back garden, friendly vibe, and playful menu—miniburgers and crispy chicken wraps are favorites.
Craving coffee and cake? Tucked away in a narrow alley, Bean Brothers is easy to miss but well worth finding. The terrace feels like someone’s backyard, and the coffee is spot on.
Wander around to discover more fashion, design, and interior shops. And don’t skip Bookshop Van Piere—even if you’re not a big reader. It’s a huge, relaxing space filled with books (obviously), a cozy coffee bar, and lots of corners to just hang out.

Eindhoven won’t disappoint—but one day is probably enough.
